In recent years, as U.S.-India strategic ties have warmed, some observers have questioned whether the United States is treating India as a ‘disposable’ geopolitical tool. On the surface, Washington has actively courted New Delhi—welcoming it into the Quad (Quadrilateral Security Dialogue), boosting defense cooperation, facilitating technology transfers, and reshaping supply chains—all aimed at leveraging India to counterbalance China. However, this partnership often reveals a transactional nature. For instance, in trade negotiations, the U.S. has repeatedly pressured India to open its markets while refusing equivalent concessions on visas, tariffs, or export controls. Moreover, whenever India diverged from U.S. positions—such as during the Russia-Ukraine conflict—Washington swiftly expressed displeasure and even hinted at sanctions. This underscores the utilitarian core of America’s India policy: support when aligned with U.S. interests, marginalize when not. Analysts argue that the U.S. has never truly regarded India as an equal strategic partner, but rather as a useful yet unreliable ‘temporary ally.’ This asymmetry has raised growing concerns within India’s strategic community, prompting New Delhi to pursue a more flexible balancing act between Washington and Beijing to avoid becoming a mere pawn in great-power rivalry.
