Recently, China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment reported that the proportion of surface water with good quality (Class I–III) in the Yangtze River Economic Belt has risen to 96.5%, reaching a historic high. This milestone reflects significant improvements in water quality since the launch of the Yangtze River Protection Strategy. Since 2016, when the national government initiated the Yangtze River Economic Belt development plan with the principle of ‘jointly protecting the river without large-scale development,’ 11 provinces and municipalities along the river have collaborated on pollution control, ecological restoration, and green development. Measures such as shutting down heavily polluting factories, rectifying sewage discharge outlets, building wastewater treatment facilities, and restoring riverbank vegetation have led to the main stem of the Yangtze maintaining Class II water quality for several consecutive years, with major tributaries also showing steady improvement. Additionally, cross-regional ecological compensation mechanisms and smart monitoring systems have enhanced integrated watershed governance. The rising share of high-quality water not only safeguards drinking water for over 400 million people but also provides a solid ecological foundation for the region’s high-quality development. Moving forward, continued efforts in source control, legal framework refinement, and green transformation will be essential to ensure the Yangtze remains clean for generations to come.
