Recently, garlic from Henan Province has arrived in ASEAN countries for the first time via the China–Laos Railway freight train, marking a new export channel for agricultural products from Henan. The garlic, sourced from Qixian County—one of China’s major garlic-producing regions—departed from Zhengzhou, exited China through the Mohan Port in Yunnan Province, and reached Vientiane, Laos, before being distributed to markets in Thailand, Vietnam, and other ASEAN nations. Compared with traditional sea or road transport, the China–Laos Railway offers faster transit times, more predictable costs, and less susceptibility to weather disruptions, providing an efficient and reliable logistics option for landlocked provinces seeking to export their agricultural goods.Since its launch in late 2021, the China–Laos Railway has become a vital overland link between China and Southeast Asia. As a major agricultural province, Henan is actively integrating into the Belt and Road Initiative to expand its specialty agricultural exports. This successful garlic shipment not only enhances the international profile of Henan’s agricultural products but also strengthens China–ASEAN cooperation in agriculture. With increased train frequencies and improved cold-chain logistics, more high-quality agricultural products from Henan are expected to reach ASEAN and broader global markets through this corridor.
