Recently, the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Natural Resources listed two uninhabited islands—Jishan Island in Yuhuan City (Taizhou) and Bailongyu Island in Dongtou District (Wenzhou)—for public auction, with starting bids of RMB 37,000 and RMB 48,000 respectively, drawing widespread public attention. According to the official notice, the winning bidder may legally obtain usage rights for the islands, which can be used for tourism, transportation, or industrial purposes—but not for real estate development. The move aims to activate underutilized marine resources and promote high-quality development of the marine economy.Both islands are relatively small and lack existing infrastructure, requiring significant investment from the new lessee for any development. Although the starting prices appear low, the subsequent development costs are substantial, and all projects must strictly comply with ecological protection and maritime management regulations. It’s worth noting that since 2011, China has implemented the ‘Administrative Measures for the Collection and Use of Uninhabited Island Usage Fees,’ stipulating that all uninhabited islands are state-owned and can be leased to individuals or enterprises through public tender for up to 50 years.While this isn’t the first time Zhejiang has auctioned islands, the low entry price has reignited public fascination with becoming an ‘island owner.’ Experts caution that prospective buyers should carefully assess ecological carrying capacity, safety risks, and long-term operational viability before pursuing such ventures.
