Recently, the Yunnan Provincial Department of Education released a public notice proposing the establishment of a new undergraduate institution—Tengchong Campus of Dianxi University of Applied Sciences (provisional name)—markning a further optimization of Yunnan’s higher education landscape. The university will focus on regional economic and social development needs, prioritizing distinctive programs such as tourism management, cross-border e-commerce, ethnic culture, and ecological conservation to support Yunnan’s opening-up strategy toward South and Southeast Asia. Centered on cultivating application-oriented talent, the institution will emphasize industry-education integration and school-enterprise collaboration, aligning educational and talent development chains with industrial needs. This initiative not only addresses the uneven distribution of high-quality higher education resources in Yunnan but also provides crucial talent support for local industrial upgrading and rural revitalization. Preparatory work is currently underway, pending formal approval from China’s Ministry of Education before enrollment begins. In the future, this new university is expected to become a key educational hub linking Southwest China with the Belt and Road Initiative.
