Recently, Huading Mountain in Tiantai County, Zhejiang Province, witnessed a rare rime ice spectacle. The snow-covered forests transformed the mountain into a fairy-tale landscape, drawing large numbers of tourists and photography enthusiasts. Rime ice—commonly known as ‘tree frost’—forms when water vapor in the air directly deposits as white ice crystals onto surfaces like branches and leaves under freezing conditions.Located at the summit of the Tiantai Mountains at an elevation of approximately 1,098 meters, Huading Mountain offers ideal natural conditions for rime formation due to its low winter temperatures, high humidity, and frequent mist and cloud cover. The best time to view this phenomenon is typically from December to February. When cold waves cause temperatures to plummet below freezing and the air becomes saturated with moisture, rime ice readily appears.This year’s rime event lasted longer than usual and covered a wide area, coating pine trees, bamboo groves, and ancient woods in shimmering layers of ice that sparkled brilliantly in the morning or evening light. Local cultural and tourism authorities have capitalized on this attraction by launching themed winter tours titled ‘Winter Rime Viewing,’ while enhancing traffic management and safety measures to ensure smooth and secure visits.Beyond its natural beauty, Huading Mountain holds profound cultural significance as one of the birthplaces of the Tiantai school of Buddhism. The interplay of rime ice, ancient temples, and sea of clouds creates a poetic and meditative atmosphere, making it a remarkable example of the integration of natural wonders and cultural heritage in winter tourism.
