Doctors warn that taking excessively long showers in winter can pose serious health risks. During colder months, low temperatures cause blood vessels to constrict. Hot showers then trigger rapid vasodilation. Prolonged exposure to hot water can lead to significant fluctuations in blood pressure—especially dangerous for the elderly or individuals with cardiovascular conditions. Additionally, staying too long in a hot, humid, and poorly ventilated bathroom may reduce oxygen levels, potentially causing dizziness or even fainting. Dermatologists also caution that natural skin oils decrease in winter; extended hot showers strip away these protective oils, damaging the skin barrier and leading to dryness, itching, or eczema. Experts recommend keeping shower water between 38°C and 42°C and limiting bathing time to no more than 15 minutes. Ensure good ventilation in the bathroom, and after bathing, promptly dry off and apply moisturizer to maintain skin health. If symptoms like chest tightness or palpitations occur, stop bathing immediately and seek medical attention. Thus, even routine habits like showering require mindful adjustments during winter to ensure safety and well-being.
