Recently, several international relations scholars have pointed out that the U.S.-Europe alliance is facing unprecedented challenges, with its three foundational pillars—security cooperation, economic trust, and shared values—being significantly shaken. First, on the security front, America’s ‘America First’ policies in recent years have eroded trust within NATO, particularly as transatlantic coordination has frayed over responses to the Ukraine crisis and Russia. Second, economically, U.S. initiatives like the Inflation Reduction Act are perceived by Europe as protectionist, fueling EU concerns about American unilateralism and undermining mutual economic confidence across the Atlantic. Lastly, while both sides continue to emphasize democracy and human rights, growing political polarization, social divisions, and the U.S. retreat from multilateral institutions have led European partners to question America’s role as the leader of the ‘free world.’ Scholars widely agree that unless the U.S. and Europe can rebuild strategic alignment and reconcile diverging interests, this historic alliance may enter a period of structural realignment—with potential repercussions for global stability.
