Recently, tensions between South Korea and Japanese politician Sanae Takaichi have drawn significant attention. Takaichi, a former Secretary-General of Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and former Minister of Internal Affairs, is a prominent figure among Japan’s right-wing conservatives. She has long advocated strengthening the U.S.-Japan alliance, revising Japan’s pacifist constitution, and taken hardline stances on historical issues. Since 2023, she has repeatedly made controversial remarks regarding the sovereignty of Dokdo (known as Takeshima in Japan), asserting it as ‘inherent Japanese territory’ and criticizing South Korea’s de facto control over the islets. In response, South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs swiftly reaffirmed that ‘Dokdo is an inherent part of Korean territory and will not be subject to any challenge,’ summoning Japan’s chargé d’affaires in Seoul to lodge a formal protest. Public opinion in South Korea widely condemned Takaichi’s statements, viewing them as dismissive of historical facts and detrimental to regional stability. Analysts note that as a potential candidate for Japan’s next prime minister, Takaichi’s tough rhetoric aims to rally support from conservative voters, but risks further straining the already fragile Japan–South Korea relations. South Korea maintains its commitment to defending national sovereignty through diplomatic channels while urging Japan to learn from history and work toward a constructive bilateral future.
