Recently, China Central Television (CCTV) conducted an in-depth investigation exposing a gray-market industry centered around ‘online pseudopsychology.’ Operating under the guise of ‘personality tests,’ ‘psychological analysis,’ and ‘relationship counseling,’ this industry widely disseminates content falsely marketed as ‘scientific psychology’ on social media and short-video platforms. In reality, these services often lack professional credentials, violate fundamental psychological principles, and may even aim to manipulate users into spending money or harvesting personal data. The report revealed that many so-called ‘psychology coaches’ have no formal training in psychology; instead, they repackage fragmented online information as expertise, deliberately stoke anxiety, and exaggerate problems to attract followers—ultimately pushing expensive courses or paid one-on-one consultations. Some organizations even use AI to generate fabricated assessment results to encourage recurring payments. Such practices not only mislead the public about legitimate psychology but may also cause further psychological harm. CCTV urges stronger regulatory oversight, clearer professional standards for psychological services, and calls on the public to enhance their ability to discern credible sources and seek mental health support through legitimate channels.
