As competition in the global new energy vehicle market intensifies, solid-state batteries are emerging as a key next-generation technology due to their high energy density, enhanced safety, and longer lifespan. Automakers and battery manufacturers are racing to commercialize solid-state batteries in premium vehicles. Japanese automakers like Toyota and Nissan aim to launch mass-produced solid-state battery vehicles around 2027, while BMW and Mercedes-Benz are collaborating with startups such as Solid Power to begin limited production between 2025 and 2026. In China, companies including NIO, GAC, and BYD have announced progress in solid-state or semi-solid-state battery development—NIO’s ET7 has already hit the market with a semi-solid-state battery pack. However, full solid-state batteries still face hurdles such as high costs, complex manufacturing processes, and insufficient cycle life. The first company to overcome these technical barriers and achieve scalable production will gain a significant edge in the premium EV segment. Industry experts agree that the next three to five years represent a critical window for solid-state batteries to transition from lab to market, with high-end models serving as their debut platform.
