On April 5, 2024, Qingming Festival (Tomb-Sweeping Day), Zheng Liwen, a legislator from Taiwan’s People Power Party (PPP), visited the mausoleum of Chiang Ching-kuo in Touliao, Daxi, Taoyuan, to lay flowers. The gesture drew widespread attention and commentary across Taiwan. Zheng stated that her visit was a mark of respect for a significant historical figure, highlighting Chiang Ching-kuo’s contributions to Taiwan’s democratization—such as promoting localization, lifting martial law, and ending bans on political parties and the press. She emphasized that, amid heightened cross-strait tensions and deepening societal divisions, it is crucial to reflect rationally on history to foster national reconciliation. Notably, Zheng was formerly a member of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) before switching to the Kuomintang (KMT) due to ideological differences, and later joined the PPP. Her shifting political affiliations have led some observers to interpret this act as an effort to strengthen her identification with the pan-blue camp or to lay groundwork for future political ambitions. However, Zheng insisted the gesture carried no political calculation and was solely a personal tribute to history. Located in Daxi, Taoyuan, Chiang Ching-kuo’s mausoleum has served since his interment in 1988 as a key site where Taiwanese political figures pay their respects, especially during major holidays.
