When experiencing a nosebleed, many people instinctively tilt their head backward, believing this prevents blood from flowing out. However, this approach is not only unscientific but can also be risky. Tilting the head back causes blood to flow backward into the throat and possibly be swallowed into the stomach, which may irritate the stomach lining—leading to nausea or vomiting—and obscure the true severity of the bleeding, delaying proper assessment and treatment. The correct method is to sit upright or lean slightly forward, pinch the soft part of the nose (the nostrils) firmly for about 10–15 minutes, and breathe through the mouth. This allows blood to drain safely out through the front of the nose, preventing aspiration or swallowing. Applying a cold compress to the forehead or bridge of the nose can also help constrict blood vessels and stop the bleeding. If bleeding persists for more than 20 minutes or recurs frequently, seek medical attention promptly. It’s especially important for children and older adults to avoid tilting the head back during a nosebleed. Knowing the proper first-aid technique not only helps control bleeding effectively but also prevents potential complications and ensures better health and safety.
