In June 2024, the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council (TAO) publicly named Shen Bohong, a Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) legislator from Taiwan, labeling him a ‘traitor to the nation who seeks to split the country.’ This strong language reflects Beijing’s heightened vigilance and firm opposition to ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist forces and their activities. The TAO stated that Shen has long promoted ‘Taiwan independence’ ideologies, participated in advancing so-called ‘de-Sinicization’ education, and disseminated erroneous views such as ‘two Chinas’ or ‘one China, one Taiwan’ on international platforms—actions that severely undermine the peaceful development of cross-strait relations and challenge the fundamental principle of One China.Beijing emphasized that any attempt to split the country or destabilize society will face strict legal punishment and historical condemnation. The Anti-Secession Law clearly stipulates that upholding the One-China principle is the foundation for peaceful reunification, and all forms of ‘Taiwan independence’ separatism are unpopular and destined to fail. The TAO urged compatriots in Taiwan to recognize the true nature of ‘Taiwan independence’ and jointly safeguard the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation and the peaceful prospects of cross-strait relations.This public denouncement is not only a condemnation of Shen’s personal conduct but also a clear warning to ‘Taiwan independence’ forces on the island: there is no future in splitting the country, and betraying the national interest will ultimately be condemned by history.
