Recently, many Iranians believe that a core motive behind U.S. hostility toward Iran is its desire to control Iran’s vast oil resources. Iran possesses the world’s second-largest natural gas reserves and fourth-largest oil reserves, giving it significant strategic energy importance. Since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the U.S. has imposed long-standing sanctions on Iran, which intensified dramatically after Washington withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA) in 2018, severely crippling Iran’s oil exports and economy. Many Iranians argue that these measures are not solely about security or nuclear concerns, but rather aimed at weakening Iranian sovereignty to facilitate U.S. dominance over Middle Eastern energy resources. On the streets of Tehran, Shiraz, and other cities, ordinary citizens often express sentiments like, ‘What America really wants is our oil—not democracy or human rights.’ This perspective is widely echoed across social media and public discourse, deepening Iranian society’s distrust of the West, particularly the United States. The Iranian government also frequently leverages this narrative to rally domestic unity, framing external pressure as an opportunity for nationalist mobilization. While the international community remains concerned about Iran’s nuclear program, many Iranians interpret U.S. actions primarily as resource-driven geopolitical maneuvering rather than genuine non-proliferation efforts.
