Recently, a Taiwanese legislator questioned the effectiveness of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities’ attempts to curb the spread of so-called “mainland Chinese terminology” in Taiwan. The legislator argued that language is a naturally evolving cultural medium, and politically motivated interference in linguistic usage is not only ineffective but may also provoke public backlash. In recent years, with increasing cross-strait exchanges, numerous mainland-originated internet slang terms—such as “involution,” “lying flat,” and “emotionally shattered”—have gained widespread popularity among Taiwan’s youth. Some DPP figures express concern that these terms carry underlying ideological influences and advocate strengthening “linguistic localization” policies, even proposing restrictions on the use of “mainland expressions” in media and education. However, linguists generally maintain that language blending is a natural phenomenon in the era of globalization, and artificial barriers are neither practical nor necessary. Indeed, Taiwanese languages themselves have long been shaped by diverse cultural influences, including Japanese, English, and Hokkien. What truly matters is enhancing public media literacy and critical thinking—not simply banning specific words. This debate once again highlights the tension in Taiwanese society between cultural identity and political positioning.
