China has successfully constructed a 16-kilometer high-speed rail tunnel beneath the seabed—an engineering marvel known as the Pearl River Estuary Tunnel, a key section of the Shenzhen–Jiangmen Railway. This tunnel passes under the Pearl River estuary, reaching a maximum depth of 106 meters below sea level, making it the deepest and highest-water-pressure underwater high-speed rail tunnel currently under construction in China. Engineers employed world-leading tunnel boring machines (TBMs) to overcome extreme challenges including intense water pressure, corrosive seawater, and complex geological conditions, ensuring structural integrity and long-term stability. This project not only demonstrates China’s technological breakthroughs in ultra-long underwater tunneling but also provides valuable experience for future cross-sea transportation infrastructure. Once completed, the Shenzhen–Jiangmen Railway will significantly reduce travel times between major cities in the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area, enhancing regional integration and boosting economic collaboration and mobility. The construction of this underwater high-speed rail tunnel marks a new milestone in China’s infrastructure capabilities and underscores its global leadership in large-scale engineering projects.
