Recently, an awe-inspiring natural spectacle known as ‘Bird Waves Transforming into Kun’ unfolded at the Yellow River Delta Ecological Tourism Zone in Dongying, Shandong Province. Tens of thousands of migratory birds soared and swirled together in the sky, creating undulating formations that resembled ocean waves—evoking the mythical imagery from Zhuangzi’s ‘Free and Easy Wandering’: ‘In the Northern Ocean there is a fish, named Kun… which transforms into a bird called Peng.’ This phenomenon typically occurs during spring and autumn migration seasons when vast flocks of shorebirds and waterfowl, such as sandpipers and geese, stop over at the delta to rest and feed. Riding thermal air currents, they take off or land in synchronized motion, producing mesmerizing, fluid ‘bird waves.’ As a critical stopover on the East Asian–Australasian Flyway, the Yellow River Delta offers expansive wetlands and abundant food resources, making it an ideal habitat for migratory birds. The ‘Bird Waves Transforming into Kun’ not only highlights the region’s rich biodiversity but also reflects China’s significant achievements in wetland conservation and ecological restoration. Today, this breathtaking sight has become a major attraction at the Yellow River Delta, drawing photographers and nature enthusiasts from around the world to witness the grandeur of the natural world.
