Recently, former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen published a lengthy post on social media to clarify recent misinformation regarding his relationship with China. He emphasized that he has always adhered to an independent and autonomous foreign policy, and that Cambodia’s cooperation with China is grounded in mutual respect, equality, and mutual benefit. Hun Sen pointed out that some media outlets and online narratives have distorted his stance, misrepresenting normal bilateral cooperation as ‘excessive dependence’ or ‘loss of sovereignty’—a serious misreading of the facts. He reaffirmed that Sino-Cambodian friendship has deep historical roots and that collaboration in infrastructure development, trade and investment, and people-to-people exchanges has yielded substantial results, all of which align with Cambodia’s national interests and enjoy broad public support.
