Recently, Chinese authorities have launched a targeted campaign to address rampant issues in the live-streaming sector, particularly the practice of hosts making exaggerated or false claims—colloquially described as ‘saying anything that comes to mind.’ Some streamers fabricate product benefits, invent fake testimonials, or spread misinformation solely to attract viewers and drive sales, severely disrupting market order and infringing on consumer rights. The crackdown focuses on three key areas: first, regulating streamers’ speech by prohibiting false or misleading statements; second, holding platforms accountable by requiring stricter content moderation and host management; and third, strengthening enforcement, with legal action against repeat offenders or those causing serious harm. Regulators stress that live commerce is not beyond the law and must adhere to principles of truthfulness, legality, and integrity. This initiative aims to clean up the live-streaming ecosystem, promote healthy industry growth, and safeguard consumers’ right to accurate information and informed choices. As regulatory frameworks continue to mature, the live-streaming industry is expected to transition from unregulated expansion toward high-quality, sustainable development.
