Recently, several planned ‘Pao Zhu Banquets’—traditional rural feasts in southwestern China—have been abruptly canceled, drawing public attention. The ‘Pao Zhu Banquet’ is a customary event held primarily in regions like Guizhou, Hunan, and Sichuan during the lunar month of La (the twelfth month), when families slaughter pigs for the Lunar New Year. Neighbors and relatives gather to share freshly butchered pork, symbolizing unity and harvest. However, this year, many such events were called off due to multiple factors. First, local governments have tightened control over live pig slaughtering and large gatherings to prevent outbreaks of animal diseases like African Swine Fever. Second, in an effort to minimize large-scale social gatherings during the Spring Festival and reduce public health risks, authorities have advised against hosting these feasts. Additionally, stricter food safety and environmental regulations have made it difficult to serve pork that hasn’t undergone official inspection or come from non-licensed slaughterhouses. While the Pao Zhu Banquet embodies deep-rooted cultural heritage and community spirit, its traditional format is now being reevaluated under modern governance and public safety standards. Some communities are exploring safer alternatives—such as centralized slaughtering, meal delivery, or even live-streamed celebrations—to preserve the tradition while complying with health and legal requirements. Balancing cultural preservation with public welfare will remain a key challenge for local governance in the years ahead.
