China has recently announced the implementation of a ‘digital ID’ system for traction batteries used in new energy vehicles (NEVs). This initiative aims to manage every battery throughout its entire lifecycle—from production and usage to recycling and reuse—through a unique digital identifier, enabling full traceability and regulatory oversight. The digital ID will contain critical information such as battery model, manufacturer, chemical composition, capacity, charge-discharge cycles, and state of health, all registered and shared via a national unified platform. This system enhances battery safety by preventing substandard or illicit batteries from entering the market. It also supports data-driven decisions for second-life applications and material recovery of end-of-life batteries, fostering a circular economy. Additionally, consumers can access transparent battery history when purchasing used EVs or replacing batteries, better protecting their rights. The policy is expected to be rolled out nationwide over the next few years, marking a significant step toward high-quality, intelligent, and sustainable development in China’s NEV industry.
