Recently, Shanxi Province has achieved a historic milestone by surpassing 100 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) in renewable energy generation, marking significant progress in its transition toward a greener energy mix. Traditionally known as a major coal-producing region, Shanxi has actively expanded wind and solar power projects in recent years, accelerating the development of a new power system centered on renewable energy. As of 2024, the province’s installed renewable capacity exceeds 60 gigawatts (GW), accounting for nearly 40% of its total power generation capacity. This breakthrough not only helps alleviate regional electricity supply-demand imbalances but also strongly supports China’s national ‘dual carbon’ goals—peaking carbon emissions by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060. Additionally, Shanxi has enhanced its renewable energy utilization and economic returns by transmitting clean electricity via ultra-high-voltage transmission lines to high-demand regions such as the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area and eastern China. Moving forward, Shanxi plans to further optimize its energy structure and advance supporting technologies like energy storage and smart grids, aiming to become a key national hub for clean energy.
