In recent years, whether Chinese football has truly hit rock bottom and begun to rebound has become a focal point of public discussion. On the performance front, the national team remains inconsistent in crucial competitions like World Cup qualifiers, failing to achieve breakthroughs. At the club level, the bubble of ‘golden-era football’—built on massive spending—has burst, leading to the dissolution or withdrawal of several Chinese Super League teams due to financial troubles, which temporarily weakened the league’s competitiveness and appeal. However, signs of hope are emerging from the depths: youth training systems are gradually improving, school-based football programs are expanding, and more young players are getting involved. The Chinese Football Association has implemented reforms such as financial de-leveraging and salary caps to realign the sport with sustainable development principles. Although the naturalized player policy has yielded mixed results, it reflects efforts to explore diverse pathways. Notably, China’s U-20 team advanced past the group stage at the 2023 AFC U-20 Asian Cup—the first time in years—seen as early evidence of youth development progress. Overall, while Chinese football has not yet experienced a full-scale rebound, sustained focus on fundamentals, respect for sporting principles, and avoidance of short-termism could pave the way for a genuine and lasting recovery.
