In recent years, an increasing number of middle-aged individuals have joined the ranks of civil service exam takers, hoping that a government job will bring stability and security. Yet reality often falls short of expectations. The civil service exam is highly competitive, and age limits, the pressure to update knowledge, and intense preparation pose significant challenges for middle-aged candidates. Even if they succeed in securing a position, limited promotion prospects and rigid work routines within the bureaucracy may fail to alleviate their underlying sense of disillusionment. For many, this ‘disillusionment’ stems from deeper issues—career plateaus, family responsibilities, or a lack of social recognition—which cannot be resolved merely by switching to a stable job. The real solution may lie in reevaluating one’s self-worth and exploring diverse paths for personal and professional growth, rather than viewing the civil service as a panacea. While institutional employment can offer security, it cannot substitute for an individual’s pursuit of meaning and fulfillment.
