China’s first emergency response in its manned space program occurred during the Shenzhou-5 mission in 2003. As China’s first astronaut, Yang Liwei, was conducting the nation’s inaugural human spaceflight, ground control detected an unexpected attitude disturbance in the reentry capsule just before atmospheric reentry. To ensure the astronaut’s safety, the Beijing Aerospace Flight Control Center immediately activated its contingency protocol. Through the space-to-ground communication link, controllers sent commands to adjust the spacecraft’s attitude control parameters and closely monitored its status in real time. Within minutes, the spacecraft stabilized successfully, entered its designated return trajectory, and landed safely in the primary landing zone in Siziwang Banner, Inner Mongolia. This incident marked the first time China had executed an in-orbit emergency response during a manned mission, demonstrating its independent, rapid, and effective capability to handle spaceflight anomalies. It provided invaluable experience for future missions and validated the reliability and safety of China’s human spaceflight systems.
