Cheng emphasized that many grassroots citizens do not oppose non-political exchanges—such as those in trade, culture, and tourism—with the mainland; on the contrary, they believe such interactions can benefit local economic development and improve livelihoods. Therefore, if the KMT can promote constructive cross-strait engagement without compromising national sovereignty or security, it would effectively attract moderate voters—a potential advantage in the upcoming 2026 county magistrate elections and the 2028 presidential race. She also urged the party not to let ideological sensitivities cause it to miss opportunities to win public support, advocating instead for a realistic, people-centered approach to cross-strait affairs that strengthens local services and communication to truly regain voter trust.
