Recently, tensions between Japan and South Korea have flared up again over the sovereignty dispute concerning Dokdo (known as Takeshima in Japan), drawing international attention to the future of their bilateral relations. The islets are currently under South Korean control, but Japan has long claimed them as its own, with both sides holding deeply entrenched positions. The latest escalation stems partly from Japan’s new school textbooks describing the islands as ‘inherent Japanese territory’ and South Korea’s routine military drills conducted on the islets, further aggravating tensions.Despite historical and territorial disagreements, Japan and South Korea are key U.S. allies in the Asia-Pacific region and share broad common interests in security, trade, and addressing North Korea’s nuclear threat. In recent years, under U.S. mediation, both countries have made tentative efforts to ease tensions, including resuming limited high-level dialogues and cooperation mechanisms. However, nationalist sentiments and domestic political pressures often hinder meaningful reconciliation.Experts note that without establishing effective communication channels on sensitive issues, externally driven reconciliation efforts alone cannot yield lasting results. Genuine improvement requires mutual respect for historical facts, better management of differences, and enhanced people-to-people exchanges. In the short term, Japan–South Korea relations may remain in a state of ‘competitive coexistence,’ yet cooperation remains the rational and mutually beneficial path forward in the long run.
