Recently, Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries confirmed another outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). The latest case was detected at a poultry farm in Hokkaido, prompting strict containment measures in the surrounding area, including culling infected and potentially exposed birds, restricting movement of people and vehicles in and out of the affected zone, and intensifying surveillance and disinfection efforts. This marks the 15th HPAI case reported in Japan this winter, highlighting the heightened risk of virus transmission during the migratory bird season.HPAI, primarily caused by subtypes such as H5N1, spreads rapidly and has a high mortality rate among poultry. It poses a serious threat to the poultry industry and carries potential risks to human health. Although there is currently no evidence of efficient human-to-human transmission, close contact with infected birds may lead to human infection. Japanese authorities have urged poultry farmers to enhance biosecurity protocols and advised the public to avoid contact with wild birds and their droppings.Experts note that climate change and altered migratory patterns of wild birds may be contributing factors behind the increased frequency of avian flu outbreaks. To curb further spread, international cooperation, information sharing, and strengthened early-warning and rapid-response systems are essential.
