In response to the growing influence of the artificial intelligence (AI) era, Shanghai launched pilot AI courses in selected primary and secondary schools starting in 2023, aiming to cultivate students’ digital literacy and innovative thinking from an early age. The curriculum covers fundamental AI concepts, introductory machine learning, hands-on programming, and AI ethics, with content tailored to different grade levels: elementary students engage in experiential learning through visual programming and smart hardware to spark interest; middle schoolers explore basic algorithms and data processing; and high school students undertake project-based learning to develop simple AI applications. Additionally, Shanghai has established dedicated AI education labs, trained teachers, and promoted school-industry collaborations to bring in high-quality resources. This initiative not only enhances students’ future-ready competencies but also serves as a pioneering model for integrating AI education into China’s K–12 system.
