Recently, in response to Japan’s request to lease new giant pandas from China, the Chinese Foreign Ministry stated that cooperative giant panda research programs are an important part of friendly exchanges between China and other countries. A spokesperson emphasized that China always adheres to the principles of science, conservation, and cooperation in such initiatives. The decision on whether to lease new pandas to Japan will take into account multiple factors, including the pandas’ health, breeding plans, the receiving facility’s care capabilities, and the overall state of bilateral relations. China stressed that as a national treasure and a global symbol of wildlife conservation, international cooperation involving giant pandas must prioritize species protection and scientific research. China and Japan already have a long-standing collaboration in panda conservation—such as the beloved panda ‘Xiang Xiang’ at Ueno Zoo in Tokyo. Any future leasing arrangement will be based on professional evaluations and mutual consultations. China remains willing to deepen cooperation with Japan in wildlife conservation and biodiversity to promote harmony between humans and nature.
