Since initiating ‘panda diplomacy’ in 1957, China has sent giant pandas to dozens of countries through cooperative research programs. Following the normalization of Sino-Japanese diplomatic relations in 1972, Japan has received multiple pairs of pandas, which have become immensely popular among the Japanese public. Whether additional pandas will be loaned in the future depends on detailed negotiations regarding conservation standards, care conditions, and the overall cooperation framework.
