Recently, there has been growing interest in whether Japan will receive newly loaned giant pandas from China. In response to media inquiries, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated during a regular press briefing that panda cooperation is an important component of friendly exchanges between China and other countries. The Chinese side always adheres to principles of scientific rigor, reasonableness, and mutual benefit in such collaborations. Currently, China and Japan are maintaining communication regarding panda conservation and scientific research, but no final agreement on specific loan arrangements has been reached. The spokesperson emphasized that any international panda collaboration must fully consider animal welfare, scientific research value, and public education impact, while strictly complying with international regulations such as the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Since initiating ‘panda diplomacy’ in 1957, China has sent giant pandas to dozens of countries through cooperative research programs. Following the normalization of Sino-Japanese diplomatic relations in 1972, Japan has received multiple pairs of pandas, which have become immensely popular among the Japanese public. Whether additional pandas will be loaned in the future depends on detailed negotiations regarding conservation standards, care conditions, and the overall cooperation framework.
