Recently, China’s state media highlighted the hidden security risks associated with frequently sharing photos (‘posting images’) and ‘showing off children’ on social media, sparking widespread public concern. The report pointed out that many parents, motivated by a desire to share joy or document their child’s growth, upload photos, videos, and even daily schedules of their children on platforms like WeChat Moments, Weibo, and TikTok—often overlooking potential dangers such as privacy breaches, identity theft, and even physical safety threats. For instance, background details in photos—such as school names, home addresses, or license plate numbers—can be exploited by malicious actors. Excessive exposure may also make children targets of online scams, doxxing, or even real-world harassment. Moreover, minors cannot consent to having their images shared publicly, and their digital footprints could have long-term consequences. State media urged parents to strengthen their cybersecurity awareness, exercise caution when posting children-related content, disable location tagging, avoid revealing sensitive details, and respect their children’s right to privacy and healthy development. Experts also called on social platforms to enhance content moderation and privacy protection mechanisms to jointly create a safer online environment for minors.
