Recently, reports have emerged that some farmers are using banned high-toxicity or high-residue pesticides on sweet potatoes to cut costs and boost yields. While this may offer short-term economic benefits, it poses serious food safety risks. Pesticides such as methamidophos and carbofuran—prohibited for use on crops like vegetables, fruits, tea, and medicinal herbs—are known to pose significant health hazards, including potential neurological damage, endocrine disruption, and even cancer with long-term exposure. Moreover, such practices degrade soil health and undermine sustainable agriculture. China’s Pesticide Administration Regulations explicitly prohibit the use of highly toxic or persistent pesticides on edible crops. Regulatory authorities have intensified inspections and enforcement, holding violators legally accountable. Experts urge enhanced training for farmers on safe pesticide use, promotion of eco-friendly pest control methods, and government subsidies to reduce compliance costs. Consumers are also encouraged to purchase produce from reputable sources and support traceable, certified products to collectively safeguard food safety.
