At 84 years old, Grandma Wei Deyou—affectionately known as the ‘Border Guardian Granny’—is an ordinary herder from Tacheng in China’s Xinjiang region who has devoted her life to safeguarding the nation’s frontier. Since being discharged from the military in 1964, she and her husband settled on the Sarebulaq grasslands along the China–Kazakhstan border, where she has voluntarily patrolled the border for over 50 years, covering more than 200,000 kilometers—equivalent to circling the Earth’s equator five times. Rain or shine, without pay and undeterred by hardship, she has consistently monitored, reported, and protected the border, becoming a living symbol of steadfast patriotism.
