Recently, multiple provinces across China have released their 2023 marriage registration statistics, drawing widespread public attention. The data shows that most provinces continue the declining trend in marriage registrations seen in recent years. For instance, Jiangsu Province recorded 426,000 marriages in 2023, an 8% year-on-year decrease; Henan reported 537,000 couples, down nearly 6% from 2022; and Sichuan saw 412,000 registrations, a drop of over 7%. Nationally, the total number of marriages may have hit a new historic low.Experts attribute this ongoing decline to several factors: first, a shrinking pool of marriage-age individuals, as those born in the 1990s—already a smaller cohort than previous generations—are now entering prime marrying age; second, shifting attitudes among young people, with delayed marriage or choosing not to marry becoming increasingly common; and third, economic pressures, high housing costs, and childcare burdens further dampen willingness to marry.Notably, some regions have introduced measures such as marriage and childbearing subsidies, improved premarital health services, and organized group weddings to encourage marriage and family formation, though their short-term impact remains limited. Moving forward, building a more supportive environment for marriage and childrearing will be a key policy challenge.
