In Shenzhen, a highly modernized metropolis, harmonious coexistence between humans and nature has become a core principle of urban planning. In recent years, the city has taken an innovative step in ecological conservation by constructing China’s first wildlife-specific eco-bridge. Located at the Paiya Mountain–Qiniang Mountain corridor in Dapeng New Area, this bridge spans over Pingxi Road, measuring approximately 60 meters in length and 30 meters in width. Its surface is covered with native vegetation to mimic natural habitats, offering a safe passage for wildlife.Urban expansion has fragmented once-continuous forest ecosystems, leading to isolated animal populations and frequent roadkill incidents. This eco-bridge effectively reconnects the two mountain areas, enabling local species such as leopard cats, masked palm civets, and muntjacs to move freely while reducing traffic-related mortality and preserving biodiversity. The design carefully considers animal behavior, incorporating gentle slopes, sheltered structures, and indigenous plants to minimize reluctance among wildlife to use the crossing. This initiative not only reflects Shenzhen’s commitment to ecological civilization but also provides a replicable model of green infrastructure for other cities across China. Moving forward, Shenzhen plans to expand such facilities in more ecologically sensitive zones, fostering a future where urban development and nature thrive together.
