Recently, Lingyin Scenic Area in Hangzhou has drawn public attention due to a high no-show rate following the implementation of its free-entry reservation system. According to data from the scenic area’s management, approximately 380,000 visitors successfully reserved free admission during a certain period, yet nearly 70% failed to show up, resulting in significant resource waste and reduced access for other potential visitors.Since 2023, Lingyin has adopted a “free but reservation-required” policy, requiring all visitors to book tickets in advance via an official platform under a daily visitor cap designed to enhance tourist experience and protect the environment. However, many individuals made reservations without canceling them when their plans changed, effectively blocking others from securing slots.Authorities are now considering system upgrades, including possible credit-based mechanisms or penalties for frequent no-shows, to improve reservation compliance. Experts suggest that while free reservations lower entry barriers, they may also encourage careless booking behavior. They recommend combining public education with dynamic ticket-release strategies to optimize resource allocation in future implementations.
