Laba Festival is a traditional Chinese holiday celebrated on the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month, marked by the custom of preparing and sharing Laba congee—a symbolic porridge believed to bring blessings and good fortune. During the 2024 Laba Festival, Quanzhou Ancient City in Fujian Province upheld its centuries-old tradition by hosting a large-scale charitable event, distributing 15,000 free servings of Laba congee to residents and tourists alike. Organized jointly by local cultural authorities, community groups, and several socially responsible enterprises, the initiative aimed to promote China’s intangible cultural heritage while spreading warmth and compassion.As a historic starting point of the Maritime Silk Road and often dubbed the ‘Museum of World Religions,’ Quanzhou has long been a melting pot of diverse cultures. The Laba congee not only reflects the Buddhist spirit of generosity but also embodies the strong sense of community and mutual aid characteristic of southern Fujian (Minnan) culture. Volunteers began cooking early in the morning, using a rich blend of over ten ingredients—including glutinous rice, red beans, peanuts, longan, lotus seeds, and red dates—to create fragrant, nourishing bowls of congee.
