Centralized drug procurement is a key national initiative aimed at lowering drug prices, reducing patients’ financial burdens, and standardizing the pharmaceutical market. By leveraging bulk purchasing power—’trading volume for lower prices’—national or provincial medical insurance authorities coordinate joint purchases among healthcare institutions, significantly cutting intermediary costs and encouraging pharmaceutical companies to offer more competitive pricing while maintaining quality.Key improvements include expanding the scope of centrally procured drugs from common medications to those for chronic and rare diseases, as well as high-value medical consumables; strengthening supply chain reliability and quality oversight to ensure timely, sufficient, and safe delivery of selected products; and exploring linkage between centralized procurement prices and national medical insurance reimbursement standards to promote rational drug use. The policy also encourages innovative drugs to access insurance coverage through dedicated pathways, balancing cost control with incentives for R&D.The optimized procurement system enhances the efficiency of medical insurance fund utilization and drives high-quality development in the pharmaceutical sector, creating a win-win scenario for patients, hospitals, manufacturers, and the insurance system alike.
