A recent case of rabies caused by a minor puppy bite without proper treatment has drawn public attention. A woman was slightly bitten on the finger while playing with her pet puppy. As there was no significant bleeding and the dog had been vaccinated, she did not clean the wound or seek post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). Months later, she developed typical rabies symptoms such as hydrophobia and photophobia, and tragically passed away after diagnosis.Rabies is an acute infectious disease caused by the rabies virus, with a fatality rate of nearly 100%. The virus can be transmitted through the saliva of infected animals via bites, scratches, or even mucous membrane contact. Even seemingly healthy puppies may carry the virus. The World Health Organization emphasizes that any contact with potentially infected animals requires immediate wound washing with soap and water for 15 minutes, followed by prompt medical evaluation for PEP. Timely and standardized PEP is the only life-saving measure to prevent the virus from progressing. This incident serves as a critical reminder: never underestimate a minor wound—there is no room for complacency when it comes to life safety.
