UN Secretary-General António Guterres recently warned that the United Nations is facing a severe financial crisis, with its core budget funds potentially exhausted by July this year. The crisis is primarily caused by member states’ arrears in contributions, particularly the United States, Brazil, Argentina, and others failing to pay their dues in full and on time. By the end of 2023, unpaid regular budget assessments reached $560 million, while peacekeeping operations faced a funding gap of $2.6 billion. The financial shortfall has directly impacted the UN’s global operations, including peacekeeping, humanitarian aid, and sustainable development programs. Although the UN has implemented cost-saving measures such as hiring freezes and cuts in meetings and travel expenses, core functions may be suspended if funding issues persist. Guterres urged member states to fulfill their financial obligations to prevent a paralysis of global multilateral cooperation due to lack of funds.
