Recently, there has been growing interest in whether China’s domestically developed ‘Jiutian’ large unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) can operate from the electromagnetic catapult system aboard the Type 076 amphibious assault ship ‘Sichuan.’ The Jiutian UAV, developed by the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), features integrated reconnaissance and strike capabilities, long endurance, and a high payload capacity, with a maximum takeoff weight of approximately 5 metric tons and a wingspan exceeding 20 meters. The Sichuan, as China’s first Type 076 amphibious assault ship equipped with an electromagnetic aircraft launch system (EMALS), offers significantly enhanced deck operations compared to traditional amphibious vessels and shows potential for supporting fixed-wing UAV operations.Technically, EMALS can adjust launch energy to accommodate aircraft of varying weights and sizes, making it theoretically feasible to launch medium-sized UAVs like the Jiutian. However, practical deployment would also require considerations such as deck handling, recovery methods (e.g., arrestor wires or vertical landing), and compatibility with the ship’s command and control systems. While there is no official confirmation yet of the Jiutian having conducted onboard trials, its design specifications align well with EMALS-capable platforms, suggesting strong potential for future integration.If successfully deployed, the Jiutian UAV would significantly enhance the Sichuan’s intelligence, surveillance, precision strike, and battlefield awareness capabilities—marking a critical step toward China’s vision of ‘drone-enabled carrier operations.’
