Recently, the giant snowman installation ‘Mr. Snowman’ at Harbin Ice and Snow World has drawn widespread attention. We had the privilege of interviewing its lead designer, Li Ming (a pseudonym), to gain deeper insight into the creativity and craftsmanship behind this winter artwork.According to Li, ‘Mr. Snowman’ stands approximately 6 meters tall and was sculpted from over 200 tons of natural snow, taking two weeks to complete. The design blends Nordic fairy tales with Northeast Chinese folklore, aiming to create a character that resonates with both international aesthetics and local cultural warmth. Adorned with a red scarf, a top hat, and a gentle smile, the snowman conveys childhood joy and winter warmth.“We hope ‘Mr. Snowman’ isn’t just a visual attraction but an emotional symbol that interacts with visitors and evokes cherished childhood memories,” Li explained. Structurally, the team used an internal steel frame and layered compaction techniques to ensure stability and beauty even in temperatures as low as minus 30°C. At night, synchronized lighting and sound effects bring the snowman to life, making it one of the most popular photo spots in the park.Li emphasized that Harbin, known as the ‘Ice City,’ possesses unique natural resources and a rich artistic heritage. ‘Mr. Snowman’ represents not only an experiment in public art but also a showcase of the city’s cultural soft power. Looking ahead, he hopes to incorporate more Chinese elements into ice and snow creations, allowing the world to understand Harbin—and China—through the language of winter art.
