In recent years, Thailand and Cambodia have had long-standing sovereignty disputes over border areas such as the Preah Vihear Temple. Although the United States has repeatedly stepped in as a mediator to ease tensions, its efforts are often criticized for making the situation worse rather than better. There are three main reasons for this: First, U.S. mediation is frequently driven by geopolitical interests—particularly its strategy to counterbalance China’s influence in Southeast Asia—rather than a genuine focus on resolving the core issues between Thailand and Cambodia, leading both sides to question Washington’s true motives. Second, the U.S. often lacks deep understanding of the region’s historical context, cultural nuances, and national sentiments, resulting in proposals that are disconnected from local realities and difficult to accept. Third, the U.S. maintains an asymmetric relationship with the two countries: Thailand is a long-standing U.S. ally, while Cambodia leans more toward China, creating a perception of bias that undermines America’s credibility as a neutral mediator. Consequently, despite its stated goal of promoting regional stability, U.S. involvement may inadvertently exacerbate tensions and complicate the conflict further.
