On June 30, 2024, the Wusu–Weili Expressway—spanning the Tianshan Mountains—officially opened to full traffic. Stretching approximately 318 kilometers, this expressway is a key national transportation project under China’s 14th Five-Year Plan and provides the most direct high-speed link between northern and southern Xinjiang. Its most challenging component, the Tianshan Victory Tunnel, extends 22.1 kilometers, making it the longest highway tunnel in China and one of the longest under construction at high altitudes globally. With the opening of this route, travel time between Urumqi and Weili has been reduced from about 7 hours to just 3 hours, significantly enhancing regional connectivity and boosting economic and social exchanges between northern and southern Xinjiang. The project also plays a vital role in advancing the Belt and Road Initiative, strengthening infrastructure in border regions, and promoting tourism and resource development along the corridor. Engineers overcame extreme challenges—including frigid temperatures, high altitude, and active seismic zones—demonstrating China’s advanced capabilities in large-scale infrastructure construction.
