In June 2024, Jiaohua Reservoir, a key water conservancy project in Liuyang City, Hunan Province, officially closed its gates to begin impoundment, marking its full transition from construction to operational management. As one of China’s 172 nationally prioritized major water projects, Jiaohua Reservoir is located on the Jiaohua River, a primary tributary of the Liuyang River. With a total storage capacity of 169 million cubic meters, the reservoir serves multiple purposes, primarily flood control and water supply, while also supporting irrigation, ecological replenishment, and hydropower generation. Upon completion, it will significantly enhance water security for eastern Changsha and downtown Liuyang, providing an additional annual water supply of approximately 81 million cubic meters and benefiting over one million residents. The reservoir will also substantially improve regional flood resilience, reduce downstream flood risks, and restore ecological conditions in the watershed. Its commissioning not only ensures reliable water resources for the Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan urban agglomeration but also injects new momentum into coordinated development in the Hunan-Jiangxi border region.
