Shenzhen is advancing a large-scale ‘stockpile clearance’ project at its largest landfill site—the Xiaping Solid Waste Landfill. Operational since 1997, the landfill has accumulated over 20 million tons of municipal solid waste and once served as the city’s primary terminal for garbage disposal. However, with rising environmental standards and increasing land scarcity, traditional landfilling is no longer sustainable. The city has therefore launched this clearance initiative, employing advanced techniques such as screening, sorting, and resource recovery to treat aged waste in an environmentally safe manner. Recoverable materials like plastics and metals are extracted for recycling, while organic fractions are processed for soil amendment or energy generation. The multi-year project is expected to free up significant urban land and substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions—particularly methane—supporting Shenzhen’s carbon neutrality goals. This effort marks a pivotal shift from end-of-pipe landfilling toward a circular waste management model, offering a replicable blueprint for other megacities across China.
