The Fujian is China’s first domestically built aircraft carrier equipped with an electromagnetic aircraft launch system (EMALS), marking the Chinese Navy’s official entry into the ‘electromagnetic catapult era.’ Compared to traditional steam catapults, EMALS offers smoother acceleration, higher energy efficiency, and simpler maintenance. It can precisely adjust launch force based on the weight and mission requirements of each aircraft, enabling efficient launches not only for heavy fighters like the J-15 but also for lighter drones or airborne early warning aircraft—greatly enhancing the flexibility and sortie rate of carrier-based air wings.The EMALS aboard the Fujian was independently developed by Chinese institutions such as CSSC, overcoming key technological hurdles in high-power energy storage, linear motor control, and system integration. Its performance is now comparable to—and in some aspects even surpasses—that of the EMALS used on the U.S. Navy’s Ford-class carriers.
