The first generating units of the Yeba Tan Hydropower Station officially came online in 2024, marking a key milestone in this major national clean energy project. Located on the upper reaches of the Jinsha River at the border between Sichuan Province and the Tibet Autonomous Region, the station is one of the large-scale hydropower projects prioritized during China’s 14th Five-Year Plan period, with a total installed capacity of 2.24 gigawatts. The successful grid connection of the first two units not only provides stable power supply to the Sichuan-Tibet region but also supports the ‘West-to-East Power Transmission’ strategy, helping optimize the nation’s energy mix. Throughout its construction, the project has placed strong emphasis on ecological protection, employing multiple green construction technologies to minimize impacts on the fragile high-altitude environment. Once fully operational, the station is expected to generate over 9 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually—equivalent to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 7.5 million tons per year—making a significant contribution to China’s carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals. Additionally, the project has spurred local infrastructure development and economic growth, bringing new vitality to this ethnic border region.
